Sean Ammirati: The Weave project is interesting. And it’s something that we’ve covered a lot at Read/Write Web or a couple of times at least. How does that relate in your mind to the DataPortability.org stuff?

John Lilly: Oh yes, that’s a good question. Yes we’ve talked about that this week. So I suspect that we’ll start to participate in DataPortability.org.They’ve got to start doing something sooner or later. So like doing the actual work there is going to be the key. Of course OAUTH and that kind of stuff we’ve starting to experiments with. That stuff will be very important for Weave. So I suspect we will start to participate in dataportability.org, but we haven’t yet.

What OAuth wants to do is allow you to give Facebook permission to see your Hotmail contacts, but not to send them email, to change your contacts, or to read your mail.

At IMified, we’re looking into the specification and we’ll be implementing support in our apps. When you give us access to post to your Google Calendar, you shouldn’t have to trust us that we won’t also be reading your email. I mean, you can trust us, but you shouldn’t have to.

“ As co-authors, Ma.gnolia is racing to implement the protocol. When complete, members will no longer sign in to external applications like like our Ma.rker Dashboard widget. Instead, they’ll authorize them to access their Ma.gnolia accounts, making it irrelevant how they sign into Ma.gnolia and removing the requirement to give their password to the external application.
